Understand card costs: annual fees, instalments and account requirements

A card with no annual fee can still cost money to use. Repayment and additional charges belong in the same comparison.

Quick answer: is a card without an annual fee free?

No. A zero annual fee often concerns only the base price. Cash, foreign currencies, replacement cards, a required account or instalment interest may cost extra. Compare your expected use and check whether the monthly statement is collected in full.

Start with your usage

Write down whether you mostly pay in euros, travel abroad, withdraw cash or need deposits. Check the contractual charges for each activity. A low basic fee matters less if your most frequent usage incurs substantial additional costs.

Consider required accounts, extra cards and mandatory package charges. A card advertised as requiring no account switch can still need a reference account. Separate optional extras from costs you must pay to use the product.

Understand repayment before applying

Paying a statement in full and paying only the minimum are different decisions. Instalments can carry interest on outstanding balances. Check the interest rate, minimum repayment, full-payment option and initial repayment setting in the contract.

“Fee-free” does not mean interest-free borrowing. If you want full repayment, check whether it is collected automatically or requires a manual transfer. Plan for the due date and make sure the money is available in time.

Compare the same period and services

Compare recurring annual costs separately from a temporary bonus. A one-off credit can change the first period, but it does not replace a suitable long-term tariff. Check bonus conditions, deadlines and any requirement to keep using the account or card.

Keep control of your comparison

The cost entry sets low ongoing costs as an editable priority in the finder. Add your other requirements. A possible commission changes neither suitability nor ranking. Make your final assessment of costs and repayment using the provider’s current contract documents.

Worked example: combine base price and usage

Illustration only, not an offer: a €36 annual fee plus a 1.75% charge on €2,000 of foreign-currency spending totals €71 a year. Instalment interest and ATM-owner charges would need separate assessment. Use the same spending assumptions when comparing cards.

Frequently asked questions

What does paying a credit card in instalments cost?

The outstanding balance is charged interest. Revolving card rates are often well above those of an instalment loan. Check the APR in the price list and switch to full repayment where possible.

How do I switch my credit card to full repayment?

Usually in the app or online banking, otherwise by message to the provider. Check on the next statement that 100 percent is collected by direct debit. Some cards allow full repayment only by bank transfer.

Are there credit cards without switching current account?

Yes. Many credit cards are offered independently and settled by direct debit from your existing account. With some banks the card is tied to their own account; the terms say so.

Does a credit card affect my credit record?

A credit card contract with a credit limit can be reported to the SCHUFA credit agency. Paying on time matters most. Avoid many applications in a short period and close cards you do not use.
