Easy-access savings or fixed-term deposits: rates, access and protection

First decide when you need the money again. A higher rate can come with a longer commitment or time-limited conditions.

Quick answer: easy-access savings or fixed-term deposits?

Easy-access savings generally keeps money accessible, while its rate can change. Fixed-term deposits tie up an amount for an agreed term on specified conditions. First decide when you will need the money. Then compare gross interest for the same amount and period, together with the responsible deposit-protection scheme.

Accessible money or a fixed commitment?

Easy-access savings are generally available without a notice period, but the interest rate can change. Fixed-term deposits tie up money for an agreed period. Access before maturity is usually unavailable. Check the contract rather than assuming you can withdraw at any time.

Consider how much money you want accessible for regular costs or unexpected events. For a known future date, compare a suitable term. The comparison helps explain this distinction without making a personal investment decision for you.

A promotional rate is not automatically your annual return

An easy-access promotional rate can apply only to new customers, a maximum balance or a few months. The subsequent rate is a separate part of the calculation. If it is missing, we do not calculate a complete return for a longer period. Even a documented variable rate is not guaranteed for the future.

Gross interest is before tax and follows the stated calculation method. The prepared calculation uses simple proportional annual interest without compounding. Products using another method need a separately verified calculation rule.

Check the institution and protection scheme

Statutory deposit protection generally covers eligible deposits up to €100,000 per person per credit institution. Multiple accounts at the same institution share that limit. A different brand does not automatically mean a different bank.

For foreign banks or platform offers, the actual institution and its responsible scheme matter. Check the information sheet, country, covered deposits and any existing balance at the same institution. A protection scheme does not justify calling every offer risk-free.

Compare equal amounts and periods

Choose amount and comparison period for easy-access savings, or amount and term for fixed deposits. Fixed-deposit returns are compared only over the same term. Check interest payment, renewal and cancellation rules. Do not commit money you may need early solely because of a rate.

Worked example: a promotional rate over twelve months

Illustration only, not a current rate: €10,000 at 3% annually for three months followed by 1.5% for nine months gives a simplified €187.50 gross interest. Assumptions: constant deposit, no rate tiers or compounding, and known follow-up rates. Actual day-count rules and interest credits may differ. An unknown follow-up rate prevents a reliable full-period calculation.

Frequently asked questions

How safe is money in easy-access or fixed-term savings?

In the EU, deposits up to 100,000 euros per customer and bank are protected by statutory deposit guarantee schemes. For banks from other EU countries, that country’s scheme applies. Check which bank actually holds your money.

Can I withdraw a fixed-term deposit early?

Usually not, or only in exceptional cases with loss of interest. Only lock away money you will definitely not need during the full term.

Do I pay tax on interest?

Interest is investment income. Above the saver’s allowance of 1,000 euros per person (2,000 euros for joint assessment), 25 percent flat tax plus solidarity surcharge and possibly church tax apply. An exemption order at the bank prevents immediate deduction.

What happens when a promotional rate ends?

After that, the variable follow-on rate applies, which is often much lower. Note the end date and compare again. With easy-access savings you can move to another bank at any time.
