Switching a German bank account: salary, direct debits and cards
Check the new account, move your payments and close the old account last. Plan a German bank-account switch step by step.
By Maximilian Steinmetz ·Quick answer: how do I switch my current account?
Open the new account and test access, card use and transfers first. Then notify key payment partners, move standing orders and check direct debits. Close the old account only after outstanding payments and card statements are resolved. Statutory account-switching assistance can support eligible consumers.
1. Check the new account’s conditions
A bonus alone is not a reason to switch. Check maintenance fees, qualifying incoming payments, required cards, cash access and branches. Find out whether changing accounts affects linked savings or credit products. A new IBAN does not automatically update related contracts.
2. List your payment partners
Use your own statements to list salary, pension, rent, utilities, insurance, phone bills, subscriptions and refunds. Include annual payments. Update account details only through known, secure contact channels. CardGuided does not need your bank statements or login credentials.
3. Authorise account-switching assistance deliberately
Switching between payment accounts within Germany may qualify for statutory assistance under the German Payment Accounts Act. You authorise the new payment-service provider and choose the scope. Check which standing orders, direct debits and information will actually be transferred. Additional digital switching services can work differently.
4. Settle old payments and card statements
Allow a transition period based on your payment dates. Keep enough money for outstanding direct debits and avoid duplicate standing orders. Before closing, check pending card payments, refunds and any overdraft balance. Save the records you need and obtain confirmation of closure.
Frequently asked questions
How long does switching current account take?
With the statutory account-switching service, banks must complete the switch within fixed deadlines, usually around twelve business days after receiving all documents. Allow extra time for payees who update details manually.
Should I close the old account immediately?
Better not. Keep the old account running for a few weeks until all direct debits and incoming payments have moved. Then transfer the remaining balance and close it.
How do I find all direct debits and standing orders?
Review the last 13 months of statements so annual payments such as insurance or memberships show up. The switching service transfers standing orders and notifies payees if you agree.
Does the switching service cost anything?
Many banks offer it free of charge. If fees apply, they must be reasonable. Check both banks’ price lists.
